• New Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport to be unveiled on 16 August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The Bugatti Veyron is, by every measure, the world's fastest production road car. It's the quickest to 60, it has the highest top speed, and it can absolutely dominate a track. With a claimed 1001 horsepower, the Veyron is a major technical achievement. Its engine has 16 cylinders, essentially formed by joining two V8 engines at the crank.

• This W16 powerplant displaces 8.0 liters and features ten radiators for everything from the engine cooling systems to the air conditioner. The $1.3 million Veyron will reach a top speed of 253 mph - a speed it can maintain for 12 minutes before all the fuel is gone. Power is transmitted to the pavement via four-wheel-drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

• The car can hit 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, 100 mph in 5.5 seconds, and 150 mph in 9.8 seconds. Getting to 200 mph takes 18.3 seconds, and 250 mph takes 42.3 seconds.A special key is required to "unlock" the Veyron's top speed of 250+ mph. The car is then lowered to just 3.5 inches from the ground. A hydraulic spoiler extends at speed, and it can also serve as an air brake.

• The Veyron weighs a hulking 4,160 lbs, but even its harshest critics admit its handling is surprisingly sharp. Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1 was very skeptical of the Veyron during its development, but after driving the finished car, he conceded it is a "huge achievement." op Gear's Jeremy Clarkson also publicly stated the Veyron was ridiculous and would never be built, only to call it "best car ever made" after he drove it. He famously characterized it as "utterly, stunningly, mind blowingly, jaw droppingly brilliant."

• it might cost more than the hardtop F430, but the droptop version of the nearly perfect sports car offers the same beautifully sublime driving experience. It's a fast, comfortable supercar that never disappoints the driver while allowing your ears better access to the sonorous engine snarl.

• Now, Ferrari has built a limited-edition 16M Scuderia Spider 499 total to honor this achievement. It’s an F430 Spider with all the go-fast parts of the 430 Scuderia. Those bits include a higher-compression version of the F430’s 4.3-liter V-8 that makes 503 horsepower (20 more than in the F430) and 347 pound-feet of torque. It has a retuned suspension, serving-platter-size carbon-ceramic brakes, Ferrari’s F1 SuperFast2 automated manual transmission (60 milliseconds for shifts), and quite possibly the loudest exhaust note of any road car we have ever driven (our LeMons Fiero included).

• The 16M weighs about 3300 pounds, or roughly 200 more than its coupe counterpart; in both cars, the interior is stripped of all comfort features. Carbon fiber and aluminum trim line the cabin. There is no carpeting or leather. The only nod to sybarites is on the dash, where a horizontally docked iPod Touch functions as the stereo, sans radio tuner.

• According to Ferrari, the 16M posts the fastest time ever around its Fiorano circuit for one of its open-top road cars.

• We drove the Spider in the hills surrounding Ferrari’s Maranello factory, where the 16M devoured switchbacks. Even in extreme transitional states, the chassis never feels unsettled or spooky. Driving a $313,350 exotic—particularly one you don’t own—near the limit on a country road is a riot, but it can be a bit on the stressful side. Fortunately, this car inspires as much confidence as respect and awe. That’s why the F430, in any form, is undefeated in C/D comparison tests.

• Expect the 16M to reach 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The all-wheel-drive Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder will likely win a drag race (0 to 60 for the Gallardo coupe is 3.2 seconds; we haven’t yet tested the Spyder) and perhaps even a beauty contest. But the 16M dominates the Lambo when it comes to chassis performance. We’re betting the Ferrari will remain undefeated when it goes toe-to-toe in a comparo.

• Now, a word of caution: Don’t hang around thinking you’ll be first in line for a 17M. Through the sixth race of the Grand Prix season, Ferrari’s hope of a repeat is as good as Manny’s chances of winning MVP—the big F is 69 points behind rookie underdog Brawn-Mercedes.

• British luxury carmaker Bentley launched a new flagship coupe for 2008 called the Brooklands. The big two-door coupe features unique styling thanks to its pillar-less profile and is described by the company as "the world's most exclusive coupe." Production is limited to just 550 units, featuring the most powerful engine Bentley has ever produced.

• Bentley's chairman Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen describes the motivation behind the new coupe: "Bentley's proud sporting pedigree, forged by the exploits of the immortal 'Bentley Boys' on the famous Brooklands racetrack in the 1920s, was the inspiration for our new coupe, capturing all the style, power and splendor of that era."
  

• The new Bentley Brooklands possesses the most powerful V8 the company has ever produced -- a 530 horsepower, twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter unit that also produces 775 pound-feet of torque. As with the latest Arnage, the V8 engine is mated to a six-speed transmission driving the rear wheels in the classic fashion. Performance thanks to the big powerplant is impressive; standstill to 60mph is dispatched in 5 seconds flat, and propels it to a top speed of 184mph. Optional carbon carbide brakes behind big 20-inch wheels bring the heavy, near-5,900lb mass.
